Circadian clocks
نویسنده
چکیده
The biological world is not static: organisms inhabit environments which change predictably over the course of the day and night. There will therefore be selective advantage to any individuals able to anticipate these changes and attune their physiology and behaviour accordingly. Anticipation of daily cycles is conferred by endogenous timers, biological clocks with an intrinsic period of approximately one day (hence circadian). It is now widely accepted that circadian timing is a fundamental property of life, and the ubiquitous expression of circadian rhythms has provided the biologist with many ways of looking at the clock. As a result, circadian timing now stands out as a paradigm for the explanation of how apparently complex patterns of behaviour and physiology might arise from the properties of a relatively small number of gene products, acting in single cells.

Ribonucleoprotein Complexes That Control Circadian Clocks
Circadian clocks are internal molecular time-keeping mechanisms that enable organisms to adjust their physiology and behavior to the daily surroundings. Misalignment of circadian clocks leads to both physiological and health impairment. Post-transcriptional regulation and translational regulation of circadian clocks have been extensively investigated. In addition, accumulating evidence has shed...
متن کاملCircadian clocks, diets and aging
Diets and feeding regimens affect many physiological systems in the organism and may contribute to the development or prevention of various pathologies including cardiovascular diseases or metabolic syndromes. Some of the dietary paradigms, such as calorie restriction, have many well-documented positive metabolic effects as well as the potential to extend longevity in different organisms. Recen...
متن کاملPosttranslational control of the Neurospora circadian clock.
The eukaryotic circadian clocks are composed of autoregulatory circadian negative feedback loops that include both positive and negative elements. Investigations of the Neurospora circadian clock system have elucidated many of the basic mechanisms that underlie circadian rhythms, including negative feedback and light and temperature entrainment common to all eukaryotic clocks. The conservation ...
متن کاملSynchronizing the Neurospora crassa circadian clock with the rhythmic environment.
The metronomic predictability of the environment has elicited strong selection pressures for the evolution of endogenous circadian clocks. Circadian clocks drive molecular and behavioural rhythms that approximate the 24 h periodicity of our environment. Found almost ubiquitously among phyla, circadian clocks allow preadaptation to rhythms concomitant with the natural cycles of the Earth. Cycles...
متن کاملBasic science review on circadian rhythm biology and circadian sleep disorders.
The sleep-wake cycle displays a characteristic 24-hour periodicity, providing an opportunity to dissect the endogenous circadian clock through the study of aberrant behaviour. This article surveys the properties of circadian clocks, with emphasis on mammals. Information was obtained from searches of peer-reviewed literature in the PUBMED database. Features that are highlighted include the known...
